Q and A with Tillie Cole

1) With each book your work seems to get darker, is this a path you plan to stay on? Will you dabble in other genres?
I adore the darker route my writing is going down. That being said, I have 4 books scheduled for next year, three of which are a YA fantasy Trilogy. This will be completely different from anything I’ve ever done before. In fact, I am almost finished the first book in that trilogy and I love it!
I have always, and will forever, continue to write whatever inspires me, and that, in theory, could be in any genre.

2) Will there be a novella on the pregnancy and birth of Rome and Molly’s first child after the miscarriage?
No. In Sweet Hope, Ally’s novel, you will see Rome and Molly around that time, so that will give Molly and Rome fans some insight into their future. Ally moves in with them for a while in Seattle when her career takes her there. But here will be no novella. The fourth and final book will be Sweet Hope, and that will be out next year. It is set when all the gang are in their mid-twenties. I can’t wait to write this one! I already have the epilogue and it simply makes me smile!!!
3) Do you feel more pressure with the Sweet Fall release due to it being so much more personal to you than some of your other works?
Yes and no. It is VERY different to Sweet Home, so there is always the worry that SH fans will be slightly taken aback with the topics Sweet Fall addresses, of the darker route it has taken. It also discusses some very personal and controversial themes. There was pressure to get them right, but being that I personally went through a disorder that Lexi is living with, I simply wrote it honestly, personally and from my heart.
Sweet Fall is it’s own story from Sweet Home, so I felt pressure to make it stand proud beside Sweet Home. I feel as though I’ve achieved this and the initial reaction from bloggers and readers has been astounding. I’m truly humbled.

BLURB

From the USA Today Best Selling Sweet Home Series, comes Sweet Fall; a tale of heartache, beating the odds and finding strength in the most unlikeliest of places.
We all have secrets.

Secrets well buried.

Until we find the one soul who makes the burden of such secrets just that little bit easier to bear.

Lexington “Lexi” Hart is a senior at the University of Alabama. Surrounded by her best friends, her loving family and having fulfilled her life-long dream of making the Crimson Tide cheer squad, everything is going exactly as she always dreamed it would. But beneath her happy exterior, demons lurk, threatening to jeopardize everything Lexi has worked to achieve.

When events in her life become too much to cope with, Lexi finds herself spiraling down into the realm of her biggest fear. Lexi falls hard, victim once again to the only thing that can destroy her and, on the way, finds herself falling straight into the dangerous tattooed arms of a guy from the wrong side of the tracks.

Austin Carillo, starting Wide Receiver for the Alabama Crimson Tide, must get picked in this year’s NFL draft. He needs it. His brothers need it. Most importantly, his mother desperately needs it. Brought up in a world where the poor are forgotten, the sick are left to fend for themselves and no hero miraculously appears to pull you out of hell, Austin had no other choice but to make a living on the wrong side of the law—until football offered Austin the break to get his life back on track.

But when a family tragedy drags him back into the clutches of the gang he believed he had left far behind, Austin finds himself falling. Falling back into criminal ways and falling deep into a suffocating darkness. Until a troubled yet kindred spirit stumbles across his path, where Austin quickly finds he is falling for a young woman—a young woman who might just have the power to save him from his worst enemy: himself.

Can two troubled souls find a lasting peace together? Or will they finally succumb to the demons threatening to destroy them?

Tracey-Lee’s Review

I would like to start off by saying fenomenale Tillie Cole! I am in complete awe of you and your strength. I thank you for sharing yourself and making this story something so, so special.

Already being a fan of Tillie’s Sweet Series I was worried when I heard that Sweet Fall would be dark and gritty. Can I tell you, I had no reason to be! Tillie had said SF would be an emotional rollercoaster, how emotionally draining this book was for her to write but before reading the foreword I had no idea!!! I knew from that point this journey she was about to take me on was one I have never experienced.

Every day is a struggle in the life of Lexington Hart. Lexi has a very big, very dangerous secret; one she fight’s daily to keep hidden from her friends, from the world. Putting all her hard work, all her rehabilitation to the test Lexi puts herself back out there and joins the Crimson Tide Cheer Squad – her passion, the thing she loved most; but it’s also the thing that tests her strengths, her ability to prevent the voice from taking control. Throw in a troubled tattooed bad boy with his own secrets and his own struggles into the mix and you have one heartbreaking love story. Austin Carillo has a reputation; he an Italian, tattooed, bad boy with a rough past and is the wide receiver for the Crimson Tide. Trying to put his gang affiliation behind him and make the NFL, trying to make something of himself to get his famiglia out of living in the hell they call life and he will do whatever it takes to make sure this happens.
His brothers start dealing drugs on campus and jeopardise everything he’s worked so hard for. Austin’s mother is extremely ill and they cannot afford her medication, so they make their money and look after each other the way they know how and this has Austin torn. When Lexi witnesses a drug deal going down at the school Austin is determined to protect his family, to protect his future and he needs to make sure she stays quiet. What he doesn’t know is she is as broken as he is. Fate steps in and Austin finds Lexi tends to always show up when he needs it.

“We all have secrets, Austin. Some peoples are bigger than others, that’s all. Wouldn’t you agree?”

These two troubled souls are brought together by fate, finding themselves in the right or wrong place at the right time when the other needs it most even if they don’t realise it at first. Lexi and Austin made each other strong; they made each other want to be better, do better. They were each other’s salvation.
“Why the war paint, Pix?”
“Because I can’t stand the girl underneath,” she whispered

“Why the tattoos?” Lexi asked
“Because I can’t bear seeing the scars of my past.”

Sweet Fall proved to me that you can’t judge a book by its cover. A guy with tattoos and piercings from the wrong side of the tracks, or a preppy cheerleader who is always wearing a perfect smile, no matter how good or bad one my seem you never truly know a person or the inner demons they are struggling to fight on a daily basis.
Another must read by Tillie Cole. ❤

Kim’s Review

I really like Tillie Cole’s writing. It makes me stop and think. Now I read a lot. I can’t really defind or quantify it for you but just know that it is a lot. So a book that gives me a book hangover for a couple of days is a rare book indeed.
I love Molly and Rome. I cannot deny this. As I started reading Austin and Lexi (aka Pix) book I was worried that I would not have the same connection with them. To be honest I did not. Not even close.

I liked that in the begining of the book Austin was a jerk and I did not want to like him. Why would anyone want that? Well as I chatted with a fellow book nut tonight we decided that often charcters in books do not face real issues. Oh there may be some sort of agnst for them to fight through but it usually is easily solved, often with the guy saving the girl. In Austin you have someone whose family is fighting a fight that most of us are not aware of really going on. They are not only struggling with life and death on the streets but life and death of the glue that holds their family together, their mom.

Lexi – here is a girl that has the perfect life, why she is in a sorority, and is a cheerleader for one of the most widely known college football teams. To get on the team is no easy feat. You have to have skill, and lets be honest look the part. Lexi fits, but at the same time presents herself as a goth girl. But underneath all the war paint she is terrified to look in the mirror. She is anorexic and while I have a completely different side of this story in my life it all boils down to Body Dysmorphic Disorder. It is hell to look in the mirror and cut down the things you see. Most of us live our lives doing exactly that.

Austin hides his scars behind the tattoos, Lexi behind her war paint. Its so easy to identify with these characters. I loved the path that Ms Cole took us down and I cannot wait for the next Sweet book to come out — I have my ideas on who Ally marries..

I found a quote once and I said it many times in my head to Lexi as she fought her demons, I wanted to just hug her – I hope we all remember it — “I am my own biggest critic. Before anyone has criticized me, I have already criticized myself. But for the rest of the life I am going to be with me and I don’t want to spend my life with someone who is always so critical. So I am going to stop being my own critic. Its high time I accept all the good things about me.” C JoyBell C. (This is by far one of the hardest quotes to live by!!)

I recommend this book to you. Take with you an open mind and a pure heart and you will find the absolute beauty within. Bravo Tillie Cole, Bravo.
